Garrett Morgan's music won't leave you Standing On A Bridge

Indie musicians are everywhere now-a-days making it great for them but harder to find truly good artists. Garrett Morgan is one of those stand out greats. Garrett’s style of country is uniquely fresh yet comfortably true – kinda like your favorite jeans – his music fits just right and makes you never want to take it off your player.

Although living in Sacramento (where he's enjoying the No. 1 slot on Sacramento's Americana charts at http://reverbnation.com/garrettmorganmusic ) Garrett's roots are deep in Texas. Growing up around San Antonio, the classic Texas style, red dirt music is clearly deeply imbedded in his soul. Recently, on Twitter, Garrett stated “I have a deeply held belief that every song would be better with banjo in it.” He not only uses a little banjo in his music, but fiddle, mandolin, guitar and drums – topped off with clear lead vocals and extraordinary backup vocals -blending it all together to create songs you will want to hear over and over again. From the haunting lyrics of She Says to the foot stomping beat of Serena there is something for everyone in his EP. But the the one cut that captured my heart is the title cut – Standing on a Bridge. The Guitar beginning lures you in letting the rich vocals grab you, and closing your eyes – you are on that bridge.

Garrett knows how difficult it is to stand out from the crowd as an Indie. "I can reach every single fan that Sony or Columbia can, I just have to make better use of resources.” says Garrett. You can find Garrett on Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, Reverbnation.com , as well as iTunes, CDBaby, and his own site – www.garrettmorganmusic.com

To sum it up – Garrett must stand for : Gutsy Artistic Red Road Epic Tantalizing Tunes

“I'm fortunate to have figured out that to be able to make music other people love hearing - music that tugs at their emotions - is such a huge honor. I'll never take that for granted." - Garrett Morgan

Press Release: MeanStreet Riders Debut CD High On The Hog

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) September 07, 2011
The embodiment of personal freedom – life, liberty and rock n’ roll – is undoubtedly the MeanStreet Riders. With the release of their debut album “High on the Hog,” on Sept 13th, these motorcycle riding, freedom-loving songwriters have turned their passion for the freedom and the open road into an album of Country-tinged, pure American rock n’ roll. Accompanying the release of their album is a rockumentary short film documenting their inspired story.
The MeanStreet Riders were formed in 2008 by a group of Florida-based songwriters who shared a mutual passion for riding motorcycles and freedom. What started out as an adventurous ride through the southern United States, culminating at the ”Dragon” an 11-mile stretch of road with 318 curves on the Tennessee /North Carolina border on US Highway 129. It was on this trip that Shannon Wallace, (guitars/vocals); Dowlin Mayfield, (guitars/vocals); Greg Torres, (keyboards/vocals); Eric Lampley, (bass/vocals); and Kevin LaCour, (drums/vocals) turned a motorcycle road trip into a life-changing musical journey that extends far beyond that legendary stretch of asphalt.
From the authentic, guitar-driven, Blues-Rock title track, High on the Hog that tells the tale of camaraderie and individuality – to the heartfelt ballad Rolling On which regales the rebellious spirit of the characters played Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper in the classic motorcycle movie, “Easy Rider” – MeanStreet Riders’ sound runs the gamut of American Rock, Country and Blues.
The Riders incorporate their own experiences on the road into their music. For example, I’ve Had a Good Ride is a harmony-rich song based on a return to the infamous Sturgis Motorcycle Rally held in Sturgis, South Dakota. The Country-tinged, acoustic track Where I Was Born tells the tale of a father sharing a ride with his two sons across rural America.
“The incredible growth of the motorcycle community in the past few years is the result of millions of people in the world wanting their freedom back and hitting the road to discover some great times, good friends and even themselves again,” says Dowlin Mayfield. The “MeanStreet Riders speak to people from all walks of life to go somewhere they haven’t been before and discover this great country and world.”
This record is an album about family, friends, relationships and road trips; the American dream of freedom – and the pursuit of it. These bluesy rockers with a passion of personal freedom believe that, “life’s too short for traffic-- so rock n’ roll on the open road.”
What they’re saying…
Iron Works Magazine are giving the Riders a thumbs up for the album track by track with all 10 songs. Iron Works said “the Riders have created music that will "haunt your soul." "The boys have taken the feeling of riding and translated it to harmonies, strung chords, picked strings and driving compression". With Comparisons to Jackson Browne, Allman Brothers Band, ZZ Top and Shooter Jennings and saying its "Southern Rock Done Right!

The Riders are also getting another thumbs up from The Biker Hotline magazine The world’s largest online magazine for Riders. Jack Lawford, the magazine’s editor, says its "Foot Stompin’ and it's an album that once it goes in your CD player, it ain’t coming back out any time soon!" and "Guaranteed to have your feet keepin’ the beat with a number of the songs, especially “I’ve Had a Good Ride”, where the lyrics reflect many things bikers hold as a God-given right including the freedom to ride the open road in the company of their brothers."

Harley Girl says The MeanStreet Riders sound a lot like the Eagles. I also heard a little Molly Hatchet influence and there was a bluesy Allman Brothers feel too. I would recommend this CD as a travel enhancement for your next ride since the songs are very motorcycle and riding related. It would also be a great CD to add into your next party music rotation. After listening to the CD multiple times I found myself singing along.

Downloads maybe hot, but CDs still offer value

Why buy a CD?? I will just download what songs I like, or maybe the whole album and be done. It is cheaper, and don't have the clutter of CDs everywhere.

True. Downloads are becoming the way more and more are collecting music. With i-tunes, Rhapsody, Amazon, and even Walmart offering almost every song under the sun for under a buck a pop, why would anyone ever buy a CD again?

There are more pros to owning the CD than you think. Besides the simple fact the sound is better, CDs are a tangable item. You can hold it, download into computer, most have awesome artwork, some are collectible, and a collection of CDs can really look nice displayed. Not to mention they have value.

Value? Yes. Not only can you resell if desired, but they can be covered under most insurance policies. No , happy downloaders, most insurance policies don't cover your downloads.

A carefully acquired digital music collection has no value if a home or apartment is burglarized or damaged according to most home insurance policies. In fact, just a quarter of home insurance policies in the UK even offer to cover digital music downloads, according to USwitch.com. Only 10% of policies cover downloads valued over $3200.00.
Hyperbot.com

Think about it. One commenter on hypebot.com recommended backing up your downloads. Not a bad idea for all your data. Just make sure the backup in not just floating around in your house as well. A fire could destroy them both. There are many good online backup services now, or you can backup to an external harddrive and store it in a firebox. And no, your i-pod does not count as a 'backup'.

The bottom line is, although downloads are a quick convenient and affordable way to add to your music library, CDs are still a viable solution. And with many artists adding special bonuses such as free downloads and bonus tracks, you are still recieving a good bang for the buck.

Besides .... try to get an artist to autograph a download.

Tips on Self Promoting your Music

So, you have written some awesome tunes, recorded them, and have the downloads and CDs ready for sale, maybe even have them up on your site available for purchase already. Now What?

Gone are the early days of recording a few tunes and people finding them and buying. The marketplace is far more vast and good music is everywhere. So just how do you drive traffic to YOUR songs?

There are countless ways to do that, but fair warning, this does take time, and work. Countless books, DVDs, pod casts, webinars and seminars are available and some are really good sources of information. There is also a gazillion places on the web to find some information as well. But before you run yourself ragged looking for this, let cover some of the basics here.

Make Google Work For You
  1. Be sure your title is the title and your name: People may not remember your CD called “XYZ and ME” , but may remember it is by “The Crazy Hippos” . Be sure your downloads and CD listings have both in title.
  2. Is the price right? - Don’t expect to sell YOUR CD of music for $30 when others are selling for $14. Research your prices.
Feed The Beast - The items found on Google are not always found BY Google. They are fed to Google via Google Product Search . Luckily many, many marketplaces such as , Amazon Music, CD Baby and itunes do this for you, that is why they are a good place to set up shop

Help yourself
  1. Be Social - Social Media is a goldmine of opportunities to promote your products. You have Face Book, Twitter, My Space, and a ton of Ning Sites, all offering you a way to let a huge audience know about what you sell and where they can find it. CAUTION The KEY word is SOCIAL - BE social. Chat with the people, show genuine interest in what THEY say, and they will return the favor. Above all have fun.
  2. Join In - There are countless site to brainstorm with fellow musicians. There are groups on Face Book, My Space, as well as other places such as http://www.linkedin.com/, http://www.musicianforums.com/  http://www.bandfocus.com/ and a wide array of Ning sites. Remember - not only is it good way to find out information, but musicians buy too!
  3. Blog it - A blog is and excellent way to promote without actually doing so. Simply by writing about what you like, or telling stories about the band, where youre playing, etc people get to know you a little better, and often will look at the ’Ad’ you have on the side.
  4. Add your two cents worth - You are NOT a Blogger? Then try just leaving comments on ones you read. Agree, Disagree, give Kudos, add your two cents! When you add a comment you can also add a url. Why not use your url to where your music is!
  5. YouTube It - You Tube is one of the most powerful marketing tools for musicians today. Use it, but use it wisely. Be sure the video is interesting and good quality, both audio and video wise.
Be your biggest fan
  1. Become a Walking Billboard - Have a Custom T- Shirt made with your Logo. Or a tote bag, bumper sticker, window decal, you name it. Sell these or give them to your fans.  They will spread the word for you.
  2. Address the issue - Make some address labels that not only have your Name or BAND name and Address BUT your URL on it! I use them on everything, even my bills I pay.
  3. The 3 foot rule - Use the 3 foot rule. Simply put, anyone that comes within 3 feet of you will know you are a MUSICIAN. Find a way when ever possible to talk about songs. And if you follow this up with a business card, you just may get a sale or a Gig out of the deal.
  4. Get Reviews - ask around for reviews of the album. Just be sure to go with those that understand your genre. A country artist is not going to fare well with someone who prefers rap.
I Don’t have the time
  1. You don’t have the time to market. Many musicians don’t. Then consider hiring someone to handle your PR and Marketing. There are many good firms and freelance people that can do this for you. But WARNING: you must research them. As many good ones are out there, there are those that are scams. And remember size and price does not mean quality.
These are some of the basic steps you can take to try to drive more people to your site, and hence, make more sales. Be creative, be social, and become your biggest fan. Above have fun. It is not rocket science it is common sense. Remember common sense equals dollars and cents.

Feel free to add your two cents…. What works for you? (and lets see if you paid attention)
